In abstract expressionism, the work is anchored in a shape or mood that can be recognized but asks the viewer to take their own place in the painting and bring it to life in any way that moves them. I’ve had a year of great surprises. The body of work shown here is simply evidence of this on canvas. In between every life changing event, emotional breakthrough, success, or loss – I’ve made time to paint. Some pieces still confuse me as much as the event that inspired them. Some comfort me. And all of them represent my impulse to strive for understanding amid complexity. I have walked through my studio 100 times this year thinking the same thing – “I wish they all could be beautiful.” But the reality is that I paint the way I live. Broad strokes, deliberate moves, excess freedom, and an over-reliance on hope. So similar to life, my paintings all work out in their own special way. And they all want to be something great for someone. Lenz Studio • 2114 West Belmont Avenue • Chicago, IL • 773-929-1234 View the Abstract painting gallery >> |
